The Lou mass storage system is unavailable at this time. While there is currently no estimated time to bring the system back online, we will be providing daily updates on the status of Lou until the problem is resolved.

On Thursday October 23rd, during the dedicated time for Pleiades system-wide testing, a power outage occurred that took down all systems in the main NAS facility. The power outage was the result of smoke detectors in adjacent zones going off, which caused the fire suppression system to arm the sprinkler system and, for safety, shut down the power. Although the Rotary Uninterruptible Power System was not online at the time because it could not support the peak power requirements of system-wide testing, it would not have provided a backup for this event.  We are investigating the incident to assure that, in the future, we protect the facility and prevent false alarms from triggering a power shutdown.

During the dedicated time, systems personnel were able to restore all systems except Lou, which experienced numerous file system issues.

The system-wide testing itself was successful and resulted in a shakeout of memory module problems and a cleaner InfiniBand fabric, which should improve the system's stability. In addition, the 15 new Haswell racks passed the system tests and early-access user testing and are now in production.
