Reminder: Dedicated Time for PBS Pro Update on March 3

02 Mar, 2020

HECC systems will be unavailable during dedicated time on March 3, according to the following schedule:

  • Pleiades, Electra, Aitken: 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Merope, Endeavour, hyperwall: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

No jobs will run during dedicated time, and you will not be able to submit or delete jobs.

HECC's batch job processing software, PBS Professional (PBS Pro), will be updated from Version 13 to Version 19 on nodes served on Pleiades, Electra, and Aitken, as stated in a previous notification.

In addition, the NFS servers for the home directories, /nasa directory, nobackupnfs2, and the NEX filesystems will be unavailable from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Therefore, during this shorter window, PBS will also be stopped on Merope, Endeavour, and the hyperwall.

PBS Pro Version 19 is the basis for several features that we plan to introduce this year. The first of these will be available as soon as the upgrade is complete:

A new "d" (direct) option to the qsub "-k" argument. The "d" option changes the way the standard output and error files from a job are handled when qsub "-k" is used. Usually, the output and error files are collected until the job ends and only then copied back to their destination files. With "-kod", the job writes directly to its output file as it is running. Similarly, with "-ked", the error file is written directly. This allows you to better monitor the job as it runs.

For important information about how to use this new option, see Commonly Used qsub Options.
