Reminder: Data on /nobackup Filesystems is Not Backed Up

29 Mar, 2021

A reminder to all NAS users: When you use the /nobackup filesystems, please be aware that:

  • Data on the /nobackup filesystems is not backed up. If files are deleted or if a filesystem experiences a hardware or software problem that causes data loss, files cannot be restored.
  • If you have important data on /nobackup filesystems that cannot be easily replicated, or took a lot of work to produce, you should make sure that it’s copied to the Lou mass storage system, which is backed up daily.
  • We recommend that you use the Shift transfer tool to back up your files to Lou, as Shift provides many benefits including automatic file integrity verification and correction, and the ability to check status and restart transfers.

For more information, see the following articles in the HECC Knowledge Base:

If you need any assistance with backing up your files to Lou, please contact the Control Room at (800) 331-8737, (650) 604-4444, or support@nas.nasa.gov.
