Best Practice: Submitting Jobs from the Correct Front End

17 Apr, 2026

A common cause of submitted jobs not starting is that they are being submitted from the incorrect front-end system, which cannot access the PBS server that targets the requested node model type.

For example, if you want to run on Athena's Turin nodes, you should submit your job via the ATHFEs, which ensures that your job is sent to the correct PBS server. However, jobs requesting Turin nodes from any other front end will not run, since they cannot submit to the PBS server that schedules jobs on Turin nodes.

Here is a quick breakdown of which front ends to use for each compute model type:

System Name Node Model Type Front-End System
Lou Data Analysis Nodes LDANs (ldan) LFE or PFE
Endeavour Cascade Lake (cas_end) PFE
Electra Broadwell (bro_ele)
Skylake (sky_ele)
Aitken Cascade Lake (cas_ait)
Rome (rom_ait)
Milan (mil_ait) AFE
Athena Turin (tur_ath) ATHFE
Cabeus Skylake/V100 (sky_gpu) CFE
Cascade Lake/V100 (cas_gpu)
Rome/A100 (rom_gpu)
Milan/A100 (mil_a100)
Grace Hopper (gh200) CGHFE

Always double check that you're connected to the appropriate front end before submitting or attempting to initiate an active session. See Common Reasons for Being Unable to Submit Jobs for more details and troubleshooting options.
