Athena Supercomputer Released to All NAS Users Jan. 14

13 Jan, 2026

Athena, the newest computing system at the NASA Advanced Supercomputing facility, was released to full production to all users on Wednesday, January 14, 2025. The system is comprised of 1,024 nodes, each with two 128-core AMD EPYC Turin sockets, for a total of 256 physical cores per node. The Standard Billing Unit (SBU) rate for running on these nodes is 12.19.

To run a PBS job on the Athena compute nodes, submit the job from one of the Athena front-end systems (ATHFEs) to a queue managed by the PBS server pbs06a: devel, normal, long, or wide.

For details on Athena’s configuration, node types, production queues, and how to run on the system, please see the Athena section of the Knowledge Base.
