NVIDIA K40 GPU-Enhanced Nodes Added to Pleiades

17 Mar, 2015

Pleiades has been expanded with 64 new Sandy Bridge nodes enhanced with NVIDIA Tesla K40 graphics processing units (GPUs). Each GPU-enhanced Sandy Bridge node contains 64 GB of memory — twice the amount of memory as a standard Pleiades Sandy Bridge node — and each Tesla K40 GPU contains a separate 12 GB of memory.

With the expansion, Pleiades now contains two sets of GPU-enhanced nodes:

  • 64 Sandy Bridge nodes with NVIDIA Tesla K40 GPUs
  • 64 Westmere nodes with NVIDIA Tesla M2090 GPUs

During an initial evaluation period, which we anticipate will last at least one month, we plan to identify and improve applications that can benefit from accelerated architectures. Accordingly, use of GPU resources during this time will not be charged against your allocation. If you use the new GPU resources, please provide feedback to support@nas.nasa.gov using the subject line K40 GPU Evaluation.

For additional information on GPU enhanced-nodes and utilization, see the Knowledge Base article GPU Basics.
