Change to Default Stripe Count on Lustre Filesystems

22 Jun, 2017

The default stripe count has been changed from 1 to 4 on all Pleiades Lustre filesystems.

This change will improve read/write performance for most file access methods, and balance the load across the available servers. It will also mitigate the effect of a large default-striped file filling up a single object storage target (OST).

No user action is required. However, please be aware of the following:

  • If you create a directory that you expect to hold around 100,000 or more small files, you should consider changing the striping for that directory to 1 before you create the files. Use the lfs setstripe command to change the striping.
  • You should still consider your file sizes and access patterns, and adjust stripe count accordingly. See Lustre Basics and Lustre Best Practices for specific information and examples.
