Ted Manning
Deputy Division Chief
Ted Manning serves as deputy chief of the NAS Division. Sharing both long-term and daily operational activities with the division chief, he focuses on creating a productive and high-impact supercomputing facility.
Prior to assuming deputy chief duties, Manning served as the NAS Division’s Advanced Computing Branch chief, where he managed teams responsible for the NAS facility’s supercomputing operations and technology updates, including deployment of the Cabeus supercomputer and the Rome nodes on the Aitken supercomputer. During his four-year tenure, the branch also increased the division’s focus on cloud platforms, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and science data pipeline research and development.
Manning first joined NASA Ames in 2003 as a contractor research scientist and then in 2007 as a NASA aerospace engineer, and spent the next 12 years developing risk assessment tools that incorporate physics-based analyses for numerous agency-developed aircraft and spacecraft architectures, often leveraging NAS computational resources. He has focused efforts in such areas as physics of explosions in launch vehicle systems, failure propagation modeling frameworks, and deep space mission event modeling in support of NASA Human Spaceflight projects. He also brings industrial experience in the areas of computational geometry tool development and multidisciplinary optimization.
Manning obtained a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in aeronautics and astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and holds a Ph.D. in aeronautics and astronautics from Stanford University, where he made contributions in the fields of experimental fluid mechanics and computational aeroacoustics.
