Alexander Kosovichev

Director, Big Bear Solar Observatory

Sasha Kosovichev provides strategic leadership to NASA's Heliophysics Modeling and Simulation research team.

Bio

Alexander (Sasha) Kosovichev is director of the Big Bear Solar Observatory, the largest ground-based solar observatory with a high-order adaptive optics system. He is among the pioneers who developed the field of helioseismology, now recognized as the premiere method that enables understanding of the solar variability and its impact on space weather.

Sasha led the development of NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SoHO) helioseismology project in 1994, and developed unique techniques for both global and local methods that are an integral part of the SoHO and Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO) mission data pipelines. He has initiated and collaborated on SoHO projects that resulted in many new discoveries in solar physics.
