Heliophysics Modeling & Simulation Project (HMS)

Researcher Name

Thomas Hartlep

Research Scientist, Bay Area Environmental Research Institute

Thomas Hartlep focuses on simulation of helioseismic wave propagation in the solar interior, and modeling the structure and magnetic fields inside the Sun.

Bio

Thomas recently joined the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute as a research scientist working with the HMS team. After earning his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Göttingen, Germany in 2004, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University’s Center for Turbulence Research, operated jointly with NASA; and a NASA Postdoctoral Program fellow at NASA Ames Research Center. He then worked in the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager group at the W. W. Hansen Experimental Physics Laboratory at Stanford.

Research Interests

Thomas' research interests are in the field of fluid mechanics. His current interests include convection and wave propagation in the solar interior, helioseismology, and modeling the Sun's interior structure and magnetic field using observations.

He is also interested in understanding and modeling how turbulent flows can concentrate embedded particles, in particular, in the context of the formation of planetesimals—the precursors to planets—in protoplanetary disks.
