Abstract

The extension of the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) to transonic and supersonic flow speeds in the code PowerFLOW will be presented. LBM has emerged as a serious alternative to traditional Navier Stokes based CFD codes, in particular for the simulation of unsteady flows over highly complex geometries. A brief review of aerospace application examples of LBM, including airframe noise, high-lift aerodynamics and flow over iced airfoils, is included in the presentation.

One key limiting factor of LBM has been its limitation to low speeds due to the difficulty to achieve a stable solution for the energy equation for problems involving large variations in temperature and pressure, thus effectively limiting the applications to nearly incompressible flow regimes. In this talk a novel approach based on a hybrid high-order LB scheme is presented which extends the Mach number range to about 2.0. It is shown that this approach preserves the high computational efficiency and the localization of the underlying LB scheme.

An extensive set of validations of the new approach will be presented, ranging from 2D nozzle problems and simple airfoils to more complex 3-D wing configurations to complex industrial problems such as flow control and broadband fan noise, and including an outlook towards applications for high speed buffet.
