Abstract

Extreme pressure waves at hypersonic speeds can lead to fluid-structure interactions (FSI) characterized by large structural deformations. In this talk, we will outline our approach to modeling these FSI by combining discontinuous Galerkin (DG) and material point methods (MPM). The talk will emphasize the shock-capturing approaches used to stabilize DG computations in the presence of strong shock waves and present some benchmark results which illustrate the effectiveness of the chosen shock-capturing schemes. Additional results highlighting the effectiveness of MPM in solid mechanics problems involving large deformation and material fracture will be presented. Finally, the approach to coupling the two methods, thereby enabling FSI simulations, will be outlined.
