Abstract

Gas turbine combustors are very complex CAD models, with 3 to 4 orders of magnitude difference in size from the largest features to the smallest ones. Models can be 150,000 CAD surfaces with some surfaces having thousands of holes. A reliable mesh that resolves every detail is needed. Our approach uses Ennova to mesh directly from the production CAD database. We use a novel topology based meshing method rather than a shrink wrap method normally used for large models to avoid losses of model definition. The meshing and repair process is automatic and the output watertight mesh is then analyzed using the Cadence CharLES solver. We build the virtual hardware as per conceptual design for virtual aero testing, engine ignition, engine start up, base load operation, emissions/combustion dynamics, part load/MECL/Park mode, S1N efficiency at every load condition, and transients (from load to load).

Photo of Shoreh Hajiloo
Shoreh Hajiloo has over 15 years of experience in “Combustion Design through Computational Fluid Dynamics.” She has worked for eleven years as a Senior CFD engineer in Combustion Technology for GE Gas Turbine Systems (Power). She has implemented Large Eddy Simulation (LES) in everyday engineering design to predict and mitigate thermoacoustic vibrations, and to complement lab testing. Before joining GE Power, she was a senior CFD engineer for CASCADE Technologies, Inc. in Mountain View, CA, specializing in high-end LES for aeroacoustics and combustion processes. She also worked as a CFD combustion engineer for over three years at John Zink and Koch membrane systems, both subsidiaries of Koch Industries, where she worked very closely with a group of testing and CFD combustion and chemical processing engineers, responding to the design needs of chemical processes within Koch Chemicals including analysis of industrial boilers, heaters, furnaces, fiber membrane manufacturing, and filtration devices.
