Abstract

Digital engineering represents a paradigm shift that will be critical for maintaining technological superiority. This seminar concerns the research and development for next-generation modeling and simulation tools to address the needs of this emerging digital enterprise. Key focus areas include: (1) development of multi-fidelity models for design and digital twins trained by high-fidelity models, and (2) data assimilation of experimental and operational data so that the models represent the authoritative source of truth. The talk will draw from several examples in aerospace propulsion for liquid and solid propellant combustion and plasma propulsion systems based upon research being conducted at the Aerospace Systems Directorate at AFRL. Specific focus will be on advanced physics-based model development for turbulent combustion and their systematic use for training and developing reduced-order models. The use of multi-scale and multi-fidelity models combined with data assimilation for design optimization and digital twins will also be discussed.
