Abstract

The promise of large eddy simulation (LES) has been known for many decades, and its application to real world flow problems, however, has been hindered by its computational cost. Although the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approach has gained wide acceptance in industry, many applications call for LES.

In this talk, I will highlight our efforts in improving the efficiency, accuracy and robustness of LES in:

  • High order space-discretization
  • Efficient and scalable time integration
  • GPU implementation

In addition, I will describe the application of the high-order LES tool, hpMusic, in computing vortex-dominated turbulent flows including the benchmark problems in the AIAA High-Lift Prediction Workshops, and turbomachinery applications. The talk will conclude with possible future work.
