Abstract

Adjoint-based optimization methods have seen increased use in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations as a means of providing sensitivity information for flow solutions and as the basis of shape optimization techniques for performance improvement and robust design. This presentation will provide an overview of the Ansys Fluent adjoint solver and its application to selected aerospace cases. The topics covered will include:

  • Introduction to the adjoint method for CFD
  • >Advantages of adjoint methods for solution analysis and optimization
  • >A description of the adjoint solver workflow in Ansys Fluent, including the design tool and gradient-based optimizer
  • Some illustrated examples of the adjoint solver applied to a range of flow problems, including external aerodynamics, rotating machinery, heat transfer, and internal flow component design.
