High-Order Summation-By-Parts Operators on Unstructured Grids
Speaker: David Zingg, University of Toronto
Presentation
Abstract
Summation-by-parts operators provide a promising option for high-order discretization of partial differential equations. Until recently, such operators were restricted to structured grids. In this seminar, extension of summation-by-parts operators to unstructured grids will be presented. A review of summation-by-parts concepts, including a generalized approach, will be provided. Similarities to and differences from finite-element methods will be described. Finally, opportunities for future research will be discussed.
Biography
David Zingg is in his 30th year as a professor at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies, where he was the Director from 2006-2016. His research areas include aerodynamics, computational fluid dynamics, aerodynamic shape optimization, and application of aerodynamic shape optimization to the design of unconventional low-drag aircraft configurations motivated by the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from aircraft. Zingg has visited the NASA Ames Research Center every summer since 1988. Together with colleagues from NASA, Harvard Lomax and Tom Pulliam, he is a co-author of two well-known textbooks in computational fluid dynamics. Finally, he has supervised 33 PhD and 55 MASc students.
