Presentation
Abstract
The strand grid approach is a flow solution method where a prismatic-like grid using "strands" is grown to a short distance from the body surface to capture the viscous boundary layer and the rest of the domain is covered using an adaptive Cartesian grid. The approach offers several advantages in terms of nearly automatic grid generation and adaptation, ability to implement fast and efficient flow solvers that take advantage of the structure in both strand and Cartesian grids, and ability to construct an efficient and highly scalable domain connectivity algorithm. Earlier works by the authors introduced a strand grid solver called mStrand, with computations and validations performed for several test cases with low geometric complexity (e.g., rotor blades and simplified fuselages). In this work, this methodology is extended to more geometrically and topologically complex test cases, with advances in both mesh generation and overset domain connectivity. This presentation will demonstrate the algorithms developed for strand meshing and domain connectivity with applications that include the DLR-F6 fuselage, the UH-60A blackhawk and the NASA hi-lift CRM model.
