Abstract

High-order methods have shown great potential for increased efficiency for vortex dominated flows on account of their lower numerical dissipation. But a direct consequence of this reduced dissipation is their increased susceptibility to instabilities. Instabilities arising due to shocks in compressible flows have been investigated and a robust and efficient shock capturing strategy along with a novel shock detection mechanism inspired by image edge-detection has been proposed. The strategy is capable of sub-cell shock capturing on general unstructured grids and is applicable to any non-linear PDE.
