Abstract

CREATE-AV Helios is a high-fidelity computational modeling software for rotorcraft, developed under the sponsorship from the DoD CREATE-AV program and the US Army. A key highlight of the Helios software architecture is its modular design approach. Modules of different disciplines communicate through a flexible middleware written in standard Python. The CFD meshing strategy in Helios is to use a triple-mesh paradigm – near-body regions around the rotorcraft components use body-fitted grids structured and/or unstructured, and off-body regions use an adaptive Cartesian grids. The meshes communicate using an overset domain connectivity module. Under a recent effort, the NASA's OVERFLOW CFD solver was modularized and integrated into the Helios system as a near-body structured grid solver. The presentation will discuss the strategies adopted in this integration effort, including the handling of overset grid communications, and show results from a few validation studies including the interactional aerodynamics of the HART-II rotor and hover predictions from the SciTech 2015 S-76 hover prediction workshop. Finally, on-going efforts on modularization of the NASA's FUN3D CFD solver as a Helios near-body unstructured grid solver will also be presented.
