Abstract

Explicit dynamics programs, also known as Hydrocodes were originally developed at US national laboratories to study the effects of high explosives and high speed impacts. The explosive growth of computer performance and software technology has made it realistic to apply these programs to applications that would have been impossible in the past. Safety in the aerospace and automotive industry has been greatly enhanced thanks to simulations with explicit dynamics.

Important considerations that influence how an accurate solution can be reached in the shortest possible time include the quality of meshing, the type of solver (Lagrange/Euler/Meshfree) best suited for a specific problem, and the material models used. These are all important considerations that influence how an accurate solution can be reached in the shortest possible time. Trade-offs must be made between accuracy, computational time used and the effort needed to set-up a problem. Space related simulations, such as debris impact on a bumper shield and water landing of a space capsule will be used to illustrate how best to make those trade-off choices.
