Abstract
The field of aerodynamic optimization typically focuses on algorithms and statistical methods. In the automotive industry the additional dimension is the design language used by the studio to add emotion to the mechanical design. Our goal in automotive design space exploration and optimization is to combine inspiration with efficiency. We accomplish this goal by thinking beyond the analysis, using design quality morphing to respect designers’ character lines. We then connect the styling to an analytical system using accurate simulations, resulting in users focusing on identifying styling features that influence the flow, and leaving the system to quantify effects and find the best combinations. This represents a shift in the automotive design process at a time where regulatory and competitive design pressures are dramatically increasing.
