An Embedded Hybrid RANS-LES Approach for 3D Separated Flows

Speaker: Neil Ashton, University of Manchester

Presentation

Abstract

This talk will discuss the use of hybrid RANS-LES methods for 3D separated flows using code_saturne, an open source finite-volume code (developed by EDF energy and the University of Manchester) as well as the commercial code Star-CCM+. The use of a one-way embedded approach is also discussed for several flows including the Ahmed car body (a flow subject to 3D separation and reattachment induced by two counter-rotating vortices). The performance and computational expense of a range of difference turbulence modelling (RANS; both EVM and RSM, as well as hybrid RANS-LES approaches) is discussed for these cases. Finally the future use of these approaches for more complex geometries is also explored.

Biography

Photo of Neil Ashton
Neil Ashton completed his Masters and Ph.D. at the University of Manchester where he is focused on developing new hybrid RANS-LES methods under the supervision of Alistair Revell. During his Ph.D. he was also involved with the EU ATAAC project which looked at developing hybrid RANS-LES approaches suitable for industry and is now a participant in the follow up Go4hybrid project. He spent a year at the Lotus F1 team as a CFD engineer before taking up his current role as a Research Associate at the University of Manchester. His work is currently focused on developing new RANS and hybrid RANS-LES methods for complex geometries (such as Automotive and Aerospace applications) through close collaboration with the commercial CFD vendor CD-Adapco.
