Best Practices for Hover Calculations using Helios

Speaker: Andrew Wissink, NASA Ames Research Center

Presentation

Abstract

This talk will discuss rotary-wing hover calculations using Helios, the US Army's next-generation high-fidelity CFD/CSD rotorcraft simulation code. Helios uses a hybrid dual-mesh paradigm consisting of unstructured meshes near the body to capture viscous flow and complex geometry coupled with block structured Cartesian grids away from the body that capture the wake through a combination of high-order algorithms and adaptive mesh refinement (AMR). This talk, which was presented at the AHS Aeromechanics Specialists' Meeting in Jan 2014, will present an analysis of hover calculations with Helios examining the effect of different mesh resolutions, different reference frames, and DES turbulence modeling in the wake.
