SC15 Test of Time Award Presented to NAS Parallel Benchmarks Team
11.17.15
On Tuesday, November 17, the SC15 Test of Time Award (ToTA) Committee presented this year’s award to a team of computer scientists from the Numerical Aerodynamic Simulation Program—predecessor to the NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) facility at Ames Research Center—for their groundbreaking 1991 paper The NAS Parallel Benchmarks - Summary and Preliminary Results. The NAS Parallel Benchmarks (NPB) were developed in response to NASA's increasing involvement with massively-parallel architectures and the need for a more rational procedure to select supercomputers to support agency missions. The NPBs quickly became an industry standard and have since been implemented in many modern programming paradigms. The benchmarks continue to be updated and used widely today.
Several members of the 1991 team were on hand to accept the award and present the SC15 ToTA Special Lecture on Tuesday, including David H. Bailey, Rod A. Fatoohi, Paul O. Fredrickson, Horst D. Simon, Rob S. Schreiber, and Venkat Venkatakrishnan.
Other team members named in the award include Eric Barszcz, John T. Barton, David S. Browning, Russell L. Carter, Leonardo Dagum, Thomas A. Lasinski, and Sisira Weeratunga.
The Test of Time Award is presented each year during the Supercomputing Conference to recognize outstanding papers from previous conference years that have significantly impacted the discipline of high-performance computing.
