NASA Research & Education Network

Project is NASA's cornerstone of the Next Generation Internet. The NREN Project works with federal agencies, academia and industry partners to develop technologies and services to support high performance networks that enable revolutionary applications and demonstrations.

The NREN Project infuses emerging networking technologies, such as multicast and Quality of Service, into NASA mission-critical applications like Digital Earth. In this application, scientists study the dynamics of the Earth and its atmosphere by visualizing very large decentralized digital data sets that are now terabytes in size and growing exponentially.

The NREN Project has supported other revolutionary applications like the Virtual Collaborative Clinic that demonstrated advanced high-fidelity 3-D imaging and interactive technologies across a high-performance wide area network, and Virtual Mechanosynthesis that allows collaborative, distributed computational steering of a live simulation. The NREN Project continues to push the frontier of networking with technologies that support exciting applications for future NASA Enterprises.
