HECC User Training

HECC is presenting a series of web-based training sessions (webinars) on a variety of topics of interest to users. These webinars will be held about once a month, and will be recorded for on-demand playback over the web. Once a session is completed, you'll be able to access its recording and slide deck in the past webinars archive.

Are Cloud Environments Ready for NASA HPC Applications?
Wednesday, May 30, 2012 11:00 am, PDT (San Francisco, GMT-07:00)
Cloud computing environments are now widely available and are being increasingly utilized for technical computing. They are also being touted for high-performance computing (HPC) applications in science and engineering. For example, Amazon EC2 Services offers a specialized Cluster Compute instance to run HPC applications. Recently we compared the performance of these Amazon instances to that of NASA's Pleiades supercomputer. For this study, we utilized the HPCC kernels and the NAS Parallel Benchmarks along with four full-scale applications. In this talk we present the results of the study and draw conclusions on the suitability of Amazon EC2 for NASA HPC applications.

How Do I Use the New Sandy Bridge Nodes?
Date and Time, TBD
This webinar focuses on using the Sandy Bridge nodes on Pleiades. We begin by detailing what is new and different about these nodes. We'll then discuss how to measure whether or not they will be an efficient use of your SBU (System Billing Unit) allocations. Finally, we describe how to change your application builds to make the best use of the new nodes. By the end of the session, you should have all the information you need to determine if your code will benefit from running on Sandy Bridge nodes.
