It takes an exceptional blend of talent, knowledge, and experience to successfully integrate the complex components required to support the computing needs of NASA and our partners in the aerospace community. The people on our staff are world-class experts in many areas, including: high-speed processing and networking; software development and integration; and mass storage. We also develop tools and methods to analyze and visualize scientific data, and provide one-on-one consultation services to help scientists solve their computing challenges.

One of our key contributions to the partnership is access to state-of-the-art supercomputers, including testbed systems that are unavailable elsewhere. We evaluate these systems, pushing them to their limits to determine if they can meet the ever-increasing computing requirements of our aerospace customers. The knowledge gained through this testing is applied to NASA's production supercomputers to provide reliable high-speed computing not expected from testbeds. In turn, we share our findings with U.S. manufacturers to help make their products more useful to NASA and more competitive in the world market.

We also develop software tools that make these systems easier to use, allowing scientists to focus more on their research and less on computer science. One of these tools is the Portable Batch System (PBS), which was designed to efficiently schedule, route, and run scientists' data on the most suitable computing resources. PBS is the primary software component of the NASA Metacenter, a project to efficiently combine the capabilities of multiple supercomputers at different NASA centers.
