Chief, Systems and Engineering Branch
As chief of the NAS Systems and Engineering Branch, William (Bill) Thigpen manages staff and activities for key system development efforts—most recently, deployment of the Pleiades supercomputer, which ranks among the world's fastest and most capable systems. As Deputy Project Manager for High-End Computing Capabilities Project, he is responsible for day-to-day operations to ensure delivery of world-class supercomputing resources and services supporting NASA missions.
In addition, Thigpen serves as the contracting officer's technical representative (COTR) for the NAS Division's primary support contract, overseeing all work performed under the contract. He was a member of the President's High End Computing Revitalization Task Force, and has chaired and served on numerous panels focused on high-end computing (HEC) and grid technologies.
Thigpen's 28-year career supporting government contracts includes software engineering and mission support management. Before joining NAS in 1999, he worked for Sterling Software, Inc. at the NAS facility, leading the advanced systems development group, and managing technical teams that provided HEC capabilities and services to NASA researchers. He holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from the University of Nebraska.
