Digital
Sky Virtual Observatory
The Digital Sky Virtual Observatory (DSVO) Project
will help create a "National Virtual Observatory"
(NVO) that will provide an intuitive, comprehensive
way to remotely navigate immense celestial datasets.
Researchers
will be able to access and interrelate geographically
distributed datasets from multiple sky surveys at
arbitrary resolutions. DSVO routes large data streams
from diverse locations over high-speed networks like
the NASA Research and Education Network (NREN), CalREN2,
Abilene, and NTON; combines them on the fly; and projects
them for viewing using Virtual Observatory software.
The
joined image is a multi-spectral, multi-resolution
view of the sky. This demonstration represents the
coordinated efforts of three NASA centers and Caltech,
and constitutes a significant step in developing the
capabilities and partnerships needed to eventually
make the NVO an operational reality.
