Overview of the LDI process. Air flows through the swirler (shown as streamtubes, colored by velocity magnitude), producing a toroidal recirculation zone. Fuel is injected at the center of the venturi (liquid spray particles, sized by droplet diameter). The hot combustion zone (red isosurface) is shaped by the recirculation zone, which is critical to combustion stability, but also produces NOx.
