This page is dedicated to progress toward developing an Open Source
option for NASA software. Open Source means that software is
distributed with source code and a license that grants specific rights
with respect to use and reuse of the code. For NASA, the adoption of
an Open Source option for software distribution will have three main
benefits: enhanced software through community review and development,
enhanced collaboration through sharing of NASA-originated software,
and more efficient and effective dissemination of research products
(such as software) to the public. NASA has begun several pilot
projects in Open Source distribution. We expect that Open Source
distribution of NASA-originated software will include codes in
scientific visualization, software development tools, software
frameworks, Grid computing, and many other activities within NASA.
