2005 NEWS AND HIGHLIGHTS
NASA Ties for Best Technical Paper Award at SC05
NAS Division scientist Michael J. Aftosmis co-authored the paper, "High Resolution Aerospace Applications Using the NASA Columbia Supercomputer," one of two papers selected for the prestigious Best Technical Paper award at SC05, the International Conference of High Performance Computing, Networking, and Storage.
The work presented in this paper, written with Dimitri J. Maviplis (University of Wyoming) and Marsha Berger (Courant Institute, New York University), includes development of software architectures that can achieve near-perfect scalability on massively parallel supercomputers like the 10,240-processor SGI Altix supercomputer, Columbia, housed at the NAS facility.
Parallel performance of two high-performance aerodynamic simulation packages on Columbia -- a high-fidelity, unstructured, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solver, and a fully-automated inviscid flow package for cut-cell Cartesian grids is also covered in the paper. The combination of these two codes enables high-fidelity characterization of aerospace vehicle design performance through extensive parametric analysis and detailed simulation of critical regions of the entire flight envelope. The work showed near-perfect scalability for both codes to over 2,000 processors on Columbia. Results presented at the supercomputing conference included scalability studies to over 4,000 processors with near-ideal scalability.
This paper was one of four nominated from a pool of 62 accepted papers, which was, in turn, chosen from 260 submissions. The paper, "An Application-Based Performance Characterization of the Columbia Supercluster," by Rupak Biswas, M. Jahed Djomehri, Robert Hood, Hoaqiang Jin, Cetin Kiris, and Subhash Saini -- all of the NAS Division -- was also one of the four papers nominated for the award.
The other winning paper, "Full Electron Calculation Beyond 20,000 Atoms: Ground Electronic State of Photosynthetic Proteins," was written by a group of researchers from the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. SC05 was held in Seattle, Nov. 12-18, 2005.
