NAS Generates Fix for Data Storage Library Routine

08.08.07
When a Columbia supercomputer user reported a problem using the parallel version of HDF (a general-purpose library and file format for storing scientific data), NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) Division staff immediately investigated the root cause of the problem and devised a workaround.

NAS system engineers discovered that the problem only occurred on the SGI CXFS filesystem employed on Columbia, and traced the source of the issue to one of SGI's MPT (Message Passing Toolkit) library routines, which HDF5 uses.

NAS documented this problem, alerted the HDF5 organization, and quickly identified a fix for the user. Independently, HDF5 support staff produced the same fix: to replace the MPI function with another Linux system call ("stat"). SGI reports the MPT problem has been addressed and will appear in the next version, due to be released later this year.
