NAS Completes IBM System Acceptance Tests
08.05.07
The NAS Division completed acceptance testing of the new IBM POWER5+ system on July 19, 2007. The 6-teraflop system is part of the effort to evaluate next-generation supercomputing technology that will eventually replace the Columbia supercomputer.
Throughout the testing period, NAS worked closely with IBM technicians, who were helpful in addressing all issues that came up. Initially, both NAS and IBM staff had difficulty meeting IBM's promised performance ratings; however, after working together over the past couple of months, these performance ratings are now being exceeded in many cases.
Based on initial testing, NAS has determined that the new system is very promising for a broad spectrum of codes, and performs very well on certain hybrid parallelism codes (OpenMP + MPI, for example). The next step in the evaluation process is to run production-level codes -- those that would be run by real users once the IBM system is made available to them. After demonstrating that the system can handle a "full load" of jobs, NAS will start migrating a limited number of users to the system.
