Giveto Script Enables Simple, Secure File Sharing on Columbia

08.03.07
Columbia Supercomputer users require a simple and secure method to share work-related files within their project teams. Unfortunately the giveto command, which does enable secure file sharing, utilizes a privileged operating system function that Columbia users are not permitted to use due to security restrictions. As a result, sharing of files on Columbia has been a fairly tedious process.

To enable simple and secure work file sharing on Columbia, the NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) Division developed a giveto script that makes use of the Access Control Lists (ACL) feature now available on some Linux filesystems such as CXFS, employed by the Columbia supercomputer.

Using the giveto script, one user can easily give a copy of specified files and/or directories to another specified user, and the script automatically notifies the recipient of the transfer by email. NASA's Return to Flight users report that they are making good use of the new script.
