NREN Boosts Data Transfer Rates

08.01.07
Working with Columbia users one-on-one, the NASA Research and Engineering Network (NREN) team has made significant progress in boosting data transfer rates for various Columbia supercomputer user sites. After meeting with key users and IT support staff at NASA Johnson and NASA Glenn (in addition to the CIO at Glenn), transfer rates between Columbia and those sites have improved significantly.

NREN made several suggestions for enhancements, which were quickly implemented, including the use of a modified version of the bbFTP bulk file transfer protocol (a firewall-friendly version), and modifications of the centers' local area networks to better exploit the capability of the Columbia wide area network.

Also while visiting NASA Glenn, NREN discovered that the local IT security systems were causing a severe bottleneck in outgoing network traffic to Columbia. After making some adjustments to the firewall, and implementing bbFTP, aggregate connectivity for one NASA Glenn user improved 40-fold. For another user at NASA Johnson, transfer rates were increased from 6.5 to 52 megabits-per-second.

These one-on-one meetings help quickly identify ways to boost data transfer rates, and thus help contribute to an overall increase in amount of data transferred. May 22, 2007 was a record-setting day for NREN, which handled the largest amount of data transferred to/from the Columbia supercomputer-3.5 terabytes-within 24 hours. The monthly record for data transfer across NREN was also surpassed in April 2007 with 39.07 terabytes. This sustained heavy usage shows the importance of high-bandwidth data transfers to numerous Columbia users.
