09.22.04 - William Chan Wins Ames Honor Award for Chimera Grid Tools

During the 2004 Ames Honor Award ceremony held on September 15 at NASA Ames Research Center, Dr. William Chan, NASA Advanced Supercomputing Division, was awarded the Commercialization/Tech Transfer Award for his work on the widely used Chimera Grid Tools (CGT). CGT, a software package used for solving complex flow problems has had significant impacts in many important aerospace programs. Chan, principal developer of the software, recently applied it to mission critical work including the Space Shuttle Ascent Analysis for STS-107 and Return to Flight, and Unsteady Turbopump Simulations for flowliner analysis. Chan's expertise and dedication to supporting NASA missions through the Chimera Grid Tools is well known throughout the agency and the international research community.

The Chimera Grid Tools software package contains a large collection of tools for grid generation, flow solver input preparation, solution post-processing, and animation, among others. Since its inception, the software package has been disseminated to over 340 U.S. organizations in government, industry, and academia via Non-Disclosure Agreements. Major government customers include other NASA centers, the Department of Defense, Department of Energy research labs, and most branches of the armed services. Major customers from industry include Boeing and Northrop Grumman.
