12/5/00 -- NAS Scientist Named to Editorial Post
NAS Systems Division senior scientist Cun-Zheng Ning has been named associate editor of the Journal of Quantum Electronics (JQE), the monthly journal of the IEEE-LEOS (Lasers and Electro-Optics Society).

11/30/00 -- New Version of PEGASUS Code Released
A public beta release of the PEGASUS code (version 5.1) in now available. PEGASUS is a key component in a series of tool used in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. Version 5.1 significantly reduces user effort and allows for easier operation of the code.

11/21/00 -- New NASA Grant Reports Online
Investigators working on two related research projects funded by NASA grants have recently published several papers. The papers are available online in various formats.

11/14/00 --New NAS Research Branch Chief Appointed
NAS Systems Division Chief Bill Feiereisen announced recently that Dr. Bryan Biegel has been appointed chief of the division's Research Branch.

11/3/00 -- Scientists Show Latest Technologies at SC2000
NAS Systems Division researchers will be on hand to demonstrate molecular simulations and innovative tools at the SC2000 High Performance Computing and Networking Conference in Dallas, November 4-10.

10/31/00 -- New Website Highlights NASA Images, Research
A new NASA website showcases the agency's latest innovations in supercomputing and networking technologies.

10/17/00 -- NASA IPG Team Reaches Another Major Milestone
On September 30, NASA's Information Power Grid (IPG) team demonstrated a complete version of a grid system, reaching another major project milestone.

10/3/00 -- IPG Workshop Builds Partnership
On September 19 and 20, scientists and engineers from U.S. government, industry, and academic organizations participated in the second Information Power Grid (IPG) Workshop at Ames Research Center, lead site for NASA's IPG project.

Summer 2000

9/26/00 -- NAS User Services Features Added to Web
A New User Orientation section debuts this week in the NAS User Services area. Created specifically for scientific users who have been allocated time on the high-performance computers at the NAS Facility for the operational year starting November 15, 2000, this section contains contact information, all required forms for users to download and instructions for obtaining accounts.

9/19/00 -- Summer Issue of Gridpoints Online
Check out the Summer 2000 issue of Gridpoints, the NAS Systems Division's quarterly magazine. In "The Smallest Nanodevices: Atomic Devices with Precise Structures," researcher Toshishige Yamada explains an approach to developing atomic-scale transistors.

9/5/00 -- Experts Meet to Solve Gigabit Networking Challenges
Networking and applications development experts convened at NASA Ames Research Center for August 14 - 16 to remove some of the roadblocks causing gigabit networking to screech to a stop just short of users' desktops.

8/15/00 -- NAS Opens Research Branch Chief Position
The NAS Systems Division has placed a formal vacancy announcement for a "Supervisory Computer Scientist," who will serve as the division's Research Branch Chief, with responsibility for all management functions and supervision of branch staff. (Position filled.)

8/03/00 -- NASA Supercomputing Resources Available to U.S. Scientists
NASA's Information Technology (IT) and High Performance Computing and Communications (HPCC) programs are now offering supercomputing resources to scientists working in the U.S. for conducting advanced studies in aeronautics and related disciplines. (Proposal process now closed.)

7/25/00 -- New 512-processor Origin Faster, More Reliable
On July 17, a new 512-processor Origin 2000 system with upgraded technology arrived at the NAS Facility at Ames Research Center.

7/18/00 -- Ames Researchers Designing DNA Electronic Devices
In the ongoing quest to solve challenges with creating nanoscale molecular electronic devices, researchers at NASA Ames are working to design nanoscale DNA diodes, transistors, and simple logic gates.

7/11/00 -- Goldin 'Pleased' With NAS Strategy
Impressed by the NAS Systems Division's two-fold strategy in high performance computing, NASA Administrator Dan Goldin has charged division staff with creating a long-range plan for NAS's role in high-perfomance computing development.

7/3/00 -- Better Silicon-on-Insulator Electronics Will Benefit NASA Missions
Using numerical simulations, a team of researchers has shown that by replacing insulating material in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology, devices can operate reliably at much higher temperatures than conventional electronics.

Combining recent methods in quantum physics with biology, NAS scientists will use an innovative approach to develop models for electron flow in DNA.

6/13/00 -- Nanotechnology Team Recognized
Members of the Ames Integrated Product Team on Devices and Nanotechnology received a group achievement award for "excellence in research and outstanding contributions to the emerging field of nanotechnology."

6/6/00 -- NAS Scientists Design Optically-Pumped Terahertz Laser
Scientists in NAS's Research Branch have designed a special quantum well structure and an optically-pumped terahertz laser for applications in NASA's Earth and Space Enterprises.

5/30/00 -- Chimera Grid Tools 1.3 Released
A new version of of the Chimera Grid Tools (CGT), a set of programs and scripts for generating overset grids, has just been released.

5/23/00 -- NAS Assists First FutureFlight Central Exercise
FutureFlight Central, a unique facility that simulates real-time air traffic control tower situations, received assistance from the NAS Systems Division in recording the facility's first customer simulation exercise.

5/16/00 -- NAS Researcher Chairs Nanotubes Conference
Nanotechnology researcher Deepak Srivastava chaired, "Carbon Nanotubes: Advances in Cutting Edge Applications and Scalable Production," April 10-11 in Miami. Srivastava gave an invited talk on plasticity and hydrogen diffusion on C and BN nanotubes.

5/09/00 -- Protein-folding Code Hums With NAS Optimization
A scientific code used to simulate protein folding sequences now performs 36 times faster than was previously possible, thanks to code optimizations made by NAS Systems Division researcher James Taft.

5/2/00 -- 512-processor Origin Available to User Community
Lomax, the NAS Facility's 512-processor SGI Origin 2800 testbed system, became available on May 1 to about 200 NASA users. Adding Lomax to the mix of Origin systems at the supercomputing facility more than doubles the computing resources and memory available to those users.

4/25/00 -- IPG Team Reaches Milestone
NASA's Information Power Grid (IPG) team reached a significant milestone last week, demonstrating capabilities for remote connectivity and datamining.

4/18/00 -- New NAS Tech Reports Available

4/11/00 -- 3D Software Package Examines New Orbiter Designs
Cart3D, a software package developed by researchers at NASA Ames Research Center and New York University, is being used to examine potential orbiter redesigns, using the 512-processor Origin 2000 system at the NAS Facility.

4/4/00 -- Nanotechnology Research Presented at APS Meeting
Three NAS researchers presented their most recent findings in molecular nanotechnology at the March 2000 meeting of the American Physical Society (APS) in Minneapolis.

Winter 2000

3/27/00 -- Unique Mars Images Online
Thanks to a team in the NAS data analysis group, an extensive online archive of high-resolution images taken by the Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) is now available on the Mars Surveyor Landing Sites, hosted by the NAS Systems Division.

3/27/00 -- Chimera Grid Tools Updated
A new version of of the Chimera Grid Tools (CGT), a set of programs and scripts for generating overset grids, has just been released. CGT is widely used for solving complex computational fluid dynamics (CFD) problems in a variety of real-world applications, including launch and re-entry vehicles, rotorcraft, ships, submarines, and sailboats.
