People

Like all successful organizations, the NAS Division is only as good as the people who work here. NAS's approximately 250 employees are a diverse, talented mix of civil servants, contractors, visiting researchers, and university interns. This highly educated group includes more than 40 doctorate and 30 master's degrees in fields such as computer science, mathematics, engineering, physics, and chemistry.

Photo of person working on computerThe array of experts supporting the NAS mission includes research scientists, software and hardware engineers, applications developers, and programmers, all pursuing innovative work in such areas as:

  • Applications and services for parallel and distributed computing architectures, in particular, the Information Power Grid.

  • Research and development of technologies for collecting, analyzing and managing large, heterogeneous, distributed databases.

  • Environments for collaborative, remote visualization of scientific data, and techniques to identify important features in scientific data using advanced computer graphics and virtual reality devices.

  • Semiconductor device modeling ranging from existing electronics through atomic-scale devices.

Other seasoned specialists offer analysis and technical support skills to the researchers who use NAS's supercomputers and keep the NAS infrastructure humming, including:

  • Scientific code optimization, compiling, and debugging.

  • Production supercomputer support 24-hours a day, every day of the year.

  • Integration of new computing technologies into the NAS environment.

  • Hardware installation and development of software applications for networks, data storage, and scientific visualization.

With an impressive record of experience and accomplishment, the people of NAS have long been highly regarded both within NASA and among our university, government, and industry collaborators.
